Acting mayor pick moves to Oct. 26

The news

The City Council is expected to choose Evanston’s acting mayor at its regular meeting on Monday, October 26, 2026. Ald. Clare Kelly (1st Ward), the mayor pro tem, plans to cancel the special meeting that had been set for October 19. [1]

What changed

Mayor Daniel Biss had called a special meeting for 5 p.m. on October 19 to pick an acting mayor. [2] After the council’s October 12 meeting, the RoundTable reported that councilmembers will instead appoint one of themselves at their next regular meeting, on October 26. [1]

How the pick works

The acting mayor must be one of the nine councilmembers, and it takes five votes. [3][4] The acting mayor serves until the mayor elected in 2027 takes office. [2][3]

We updated the key dates across this guide to reflect the change.
